Sugar Cookies + Buttercream Frosting Recipe

It is tradition over here that we make my grandma’s sugar cookie recipe every year around the holidays, it has only gotten more fun as the girls have gotten a little bit older & get to participate! I looked forward to my grandparents arrival on Christmas evening every year & would immediately look for the old metal cake pan that would be full of these cookies. And now I have that pan full of them on our kitchen counter & the girls can’t help but peek in it every time they come in the kitchen.
The most fun part of making sugar cookies is of course frosting them, and I am teaming up with fairlife milk today to share our buttercream frosting recipe. fairlife milk has less sugar & more protein than regular milk, and has the most delicious, creamy flavor which is perfect for frosting!

Buttercream Frosting
1 stick softened, salted butter
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
pinch of salt
1/4 cup of fairlife whole milk
Combine all ingredients in a bowl & blend with a hand mixer.
So simple!! This recipe will give you a super thick, whipped consistency which is perfect for basic cookie decorating. This is also what I start with if I am piping it through a frosting bag to outline cookies. As you work through the frosting batch, you can add another splash or two of milk and the frosting will become much more runny. This gives almost a glossy finish when the frosting dries & is perfect for filling in the piped outlines of the other cookies. We will have dozens more cookies to frost by the end of the day (including a double batch of gingerbread waiting in the fridge!) which means my kids will be licking this frosting off their fingers for the rest of the month!
What are you baking up this holiday season? Would love to hear! XO

  1. Nom, can’t wait to make our cookies… and a big thank you for introducing me to Fairlife milk, since your post about them I have switched over and our family love it – the milk as well as their company ethos!

  2. Our cutout cookies never keep their shape like this! Trial and error, we will get there someday haha. We let our 1.5 year old son help this year for the first time and his eyes lit up. He was in heaven!

  3. We always make sugar cookies every year but have only ever added sprinkles to them (before baking them). I for sure want to try frosting them with this recipe once we do another batch. Thanks for the info, looks like the girls had fun.

  4. My husband and I are working on starting traditions with our new son. It’s his first Christmas! I’ve been a follower since you were pregnant with Harper, and remembered you posting this recipe almost every year. I thought this year would be the perfect chance to try it and be able to share the fun with our son in the coming years. I have to say, best sugar cookie I’ve ever had! (Shh.. don’t tell my Mom!) Thank you for sharing!
